Roger Wiley Cash, Sr., 72, of Oak Island, North Carolina, passed from this world on May 27, 2016, at home where he was surrounded by family. Roger was born in Shelby, NC, on October 24, 1943, to Odus and Lucille Cash. He is survived by Sandi Cash, his wife of fifty-one years; his children and grandchildren: Jada Cash of Burnsville, NC, and her daughter Laela; Wiley Cash of Wilmington, NC, and his wife Mallory and their daughters Early and Juniper; and Cliff Cash of Wilmington, NC, and his wife Tess; and his sister Pat Mayhew of Winterhaven, FL, and his brother Gill Cash of Marion, NC.
In high school, Roger worked on the pit crew for NASCAR legend Stick Elliott. He met Sandi on a blind date, and they married two years later just before Roger was drafted into the Army to serve as a medic in Germany. He graduated from Gardner-Webb Junior College and graduated from pharmacy school at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1973. After settling in Gastonia, NC, Roger joined Revco Drug/CVS Pharmacy and remained with the company for 38 years. In 1998, he and Sandi moved to Oak Island, NC, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living at the beach fulltime.
During the years that Roger lived in Oak Island, he surrounded himself with loving friends at CVS Pharmacy, Southport Baptist Church, Generations Church, small group Bible study, Thursday night prayer group, and the farmers’ markets in Southport and Oak Island. People knew him as a quiet, kind, gentle man who loved his wife and children, adored his granddaughters, enjoyed walking his dogs, building birdhouses and furniture, repairing old trucks and jeeps, and just generally living a good, contented life.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held on Friday, June 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Generations Church at 4874 Long Beach Road, Southport, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Lower Cape Fear and Transformed by the Word Ministry’s House of Hope in Wilmington, NC.
