Martha Ann Harbinson Smith, of Oak Island, North Carolina, and formerly of Lexington, Charlotte, and Kure Beach in North Carolina, entered joyously into the Heavenly Father’s Kingdom on May 1, 2017 to be reunited with her daughter Christy Smith Miller, her mother Alta Lewis, sister Jackie Harbinson, grandmother Dora Easter, and many more.
Martha grew up in Lexington, NC, attended Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and Nursing School in Charlotte where she met and married WWII Veteran Jimmy Smith. She brought sunshine wherever she went with her laughter and bright spirit. She was a homemaker, devoted Christian, an enthusiastic and regular blood donor giving blood 96 times. She also was a strong and active church and community volunteer including Meals on Wheels and Hospice. She spent 25 years in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System as an Administrative Assistant at the Devonshire Elementary School. Martha and Jimmy were avid recreational athletes. competing successfully in the Senior Olympic Games at the local, state and even national levels. They also enjoyed their retirement years playing tennis and golf while living at the beach.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 65 years, James Clyde Smith, Sr.; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Smith, Amelia Alta Smith and her son James Clyde Smith Junior; along with five grandchildren: Katie Farmer, Jamie Farmer, Joshua Miller (Emily), Ashley Miller, and Zachry Surrency.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at Ocean View United Methodist Church, 8400 E. Oak Island Dr., Oak Island, NC with a visitation following the service in the Fellowship Hall
