He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a wonderful human being. Born on February 6, 1931, in Chicago, IL, Trex was the second child of Joseph Lester and Neva Trexler Thomas. He graduated from Ohio State and went on to pursue a military career. Trex spent 27 years in the Army 82nd Airborne and was respected for his hard work, dedication, and expertise in training others to parachute safely and land unhurt. After his first wife Mary Louise Reed died, Trex reconnected with his college sweetheart Sally, and they were married for 39 wonderful years during which they traveled the world, camping, diving, or cruising. They were blessed with a dozen grandchildren, the eldest now in college, and a growing number of great-grandchildren. Trex had a love for scuba diving and enjoyed doing so in the Fort Fisher Aquarium tank where he trained other divers how to interact with the public, especially children, through the speaker-mask. He was known for his infectious laughter, his crazy stories, and his willingness to help others. His Mensa memory was second to none enabling him to recall many details of long-past events which most had forgotten. Trex was a first tenor with the Sea Notes Choral Society since 1989 and was soloist and quartet member for many years in addition to performing many duets with his wife.
He is survived by his wife Sally, his children Tracey, Brian and Bruce, his sister Judy (Neville), nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held at a later date as his children are far-flung in Wyoming, Idaho, and Alaska and will have difficulty arranging a common date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher or the charity of your choice in his name. Trex will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
