Dear Pauline,

With the prospect of aging come the departures of good friends like your John. I share your sorrow and hope you can take comfort from the large circle of friends who likewise will miss him.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to Jerry and his family, as well as to all of Mr. John's family and friends.  

Mr. John was so special to me.  I grew up across the street from him and Mrs. Pauline for 18 years.  They were like another set of grandparents to me.  I remember how on visits with them Mr. John would show me around his garden that he tended so carefully.  And he was always working and creating with his hands: gardening, painting, quilting, carving wooden boats and other intricate items.  He was so talented, hardworking, and generous.  I have 3 of his beautiful paintings hanging up in my house that I treasure.  I remember a few years ago asking him his secret to such a long and healthy life and he remarked about the importance of staying active, which he certainly did.  He was always so sweet and loving to me. He cared so much about me and my parents, and treated us like family.  

I had the privilege to visit with Mr. John this past Father's Day when my fiance, Todd, and I were down in Southport on vacation for a few days.  He was just as sweet as ever, and we had a great time catching up.  I will miss Mr. John so much.  He was an angel here on Earth and is now at peace in Heaven with God and His other angels.

Marty and I are sorry to hear that John is no longer here with us. We will miss him. 
The first time I met him, he showed up at my door and said “do you know who I am?” I took a look at his eyebrows and forehead and said, “no, but I know you are related to Joe Sam. Dad and John really had some good times.

  I wish to offer sincerest sympathy to Pauline and the rest of John’s family.  My husband and I met them through the Historical Society  and the hospital volunteers when we moved to Southport in 1993.
  They were both so welcoming and I  always   consider John to be one of the nicest men I ever met.

John was, without a doubt, the kindest,  most gentle and loving person I was ever privileged to know.  I met he and Pauline  when I became a Dosher Volunteer over twenty-five years ago.  As a volunteer,he worked  tirelessly mostly  at the Flea Market serving as Chairman for many years as well at  the hospital.  There are lasting parts of the Flea Market he built that  are still there.  In addition, he did so many other wonderful things for the community, making and donating quilts, painting beautiful pictures, some that he gave away and working with wood creating incredibe items.  John was "Southport".  He was involved in so many good deeds in town.  Heaven received an Angel the day Jonh left us  .  May his Soul Rest in Peace

I was privileged to meet John when I became one of the regular visitors with Pauline. They were the sweetest couple. His tenderness and love for her was so touching. He’d bring grapes, banana bread and she saved her bingo winnings for him. They literally would light up when they saw each other.  My condolences to the family. I miss seeing Pauline. 

Mr. John Swain is one of a kind and will forever be missed by my family and me. ❤️ Ms. Pauline carried me into my home the day I was born and from that day on they both loved me like I was their own baby. As a toddler and young child I use to follow Mr. John around his yard, garden, work shop, house, (and even onto the roof one time) like his little shadow. I was his “Baby Girl.” 
 He was so talented at every medium he took on. We have one of his beautiful seascape paintings on our wall, two quilts he made for each of our children on their beds and a little wooden rocking chair he created (one for me and one for Jerad, when we were wee little ones). I can’t imagine Southport without him.  We love your family and are so very sorry for your loss. 

My most heartfelt condolences. I am so glad to have met John. May his memory be a blessing.
