He was born June 6, 1939, to Vela Nelson Royal and Floyd Cecil Royal in Guilford County, NC. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Rachael, the mother of his only child; brother, Mack; and twin sisters, Jan and Judy.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Whitaker; brother-in-law, Rick Rhyne; and his second wife of 13 years, Betty Jo (BJ) Ellender; son Jeff Royal (Jaynie); grandchildren, Chi, Tal, and Brax who call him “A-Da.” Also, stepsons, Joe Ellender (Ashley), James Ellender (Kelsey), and Jeremy Ellender (Henry); plus step-grandchildren, Will, Walker, and Avery; two nephews; a niece; and several grandnephews. Also, many family members, friends, and neighbors.
Mr. Royal began a career at The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co (A&P) bagging groceries as a teenager and ended as a Regional Personnel Director. His second successful career was that as a Real Estate Agent, he was General Manager of Oak Island Accommodations and later joined Margaret Rudd & Associates Inc., REALTORS where he still collaborated with his Wife BJ.
Jack enjoyed playing sports such as baseball, bowling, and golfing. He led a highly active life until his death working, worshipping, serving, singing, shagging, beach walking, playing with grandchildren, and traveling.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17 at Ocean View United Methodist Church on Oak Island.
