Gladys was born on February 19, 1938 in Letcher County, Kentucky the youngest child to Hiram and Marjorie Maggard. Gladys meet and married Wendell Simpson on July 17th 1954. Gladys and Wendell were married for 43 years until his passing in 1997. Gladys married her second husband Peter Smith on October 14, 1998. Peter and Gladys were married for 15 years until Peter passed in 2013. Gladys loved animals and plants since her childhood. Gladys enjoyed writing articles for her hometown newspaper "The Mountain Eagle." Gladys was a member of "Lighthouse Pentecostal Church" . While she attended the church she traveled as a missionary to Mexico. Gladys was an ordained minister and loved preaching and teaching bible study in the nursing home. She was an avid reader of historical fiction.
Gladys was proceed in death by an infant daughter; two sisters, Bonnie Morris and Pauline Coleman; and three brothers, Earl Maggard, Kenneth Maggard and Vernon Maggard.
Gladys is survived by her son, Terrance Simpson (Mia Chanel); three grandchildren, Caleb Simpson(Isabella) Alizah Simpson (Gunnar) and Lydia Simpson; two great-grandchildren, Blakely Ann and Weston Michael; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Cape Fear Memorial Park in Southport with Rev. Charles A. Drew officiating.
