He was born on July 10, 1941 to the late Alexander George Pluchos Sr. and Elizabeth Sakano Pluchos in Westchester County, New York. Al graduated from White Plains High School in 1959. He attended Westchester Community College.
Al proudly served as rank E5 in the United States Navy stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland from 1963 to 1965. He stayed active in the Navy Reserves for ten years. He started his career in 1961 with AT&T as an engineer associate; retiring from AT&T in 1989. The family then moved to North Carolina where he began a second career at Sara Lee & Hanes Corporation in Winston Salem for ten years.
Al and Ann wished to retire near the ocean and decided to build their retirement home in St. James, North Carolina, where they have resided for the past seventeen years.
When he lived in New York, Al enjoyed boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound. He belonged to a hunting club, was passionate about ice fishing, and a member of the Elks Lodge.
Al was an avid gardener and took pride in raising a variety of vegetables in his raised garden beds. As Al’s health declined, his friends, Tom and Jeff, helped prepare the garden with him each season. If Al was not in his garden, you could find him tinkering on items in his workshop.
He was a member of the St. James Pistol Club and the American Legion Post 543.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann Pluchos; daughter, Allison Pluchos; son, Christopher Pluchos and wife, Melissa; grandchildren, Athena and Sebastian; brother, Allan Pluchos and wife, Rose.
The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Rocky River Chapter of Trout Unlimited at www.rockyrivertu.org or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, North Carolina 28422.
A private service will be held for immediate family only.
