Richard Clarence Loud passed away Friday, February 5th, 2021 at his home in Plantsville, CT at the age of 81 after a long battle with cholangiocarcinoma. He was the only child of Wilfred and Lilian Mary Loud (Nuttycombe), born September 15, 1939 in Tarnock, Somerset, England.
Richard was raised in Weston-Super-Mare, and had strong memories of his father, a P.O.W., returning home after the war. He grew up with his beloved collie, Lassie, and had a lifelong affection for dogs, birds and nature. As a young man, he enjoyed motorcycling through the countryside and working at the Grand Pier in his hometown. He chose a technical path, served an apprenticeship, and received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Wales, Cardiff (now Cardiff University). A promising career in aerospace led him to immigrate to the United States.
Richard moved to Atlanta in 1966 to work as a weight control engineer for Lockheed-Georgia. He later settled in Connecticut to work for Sikorsky Aircraft and became a naturalized citizen. In his capacity as a mass properties engineer, he was proud to be involved in the development of the Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk, RAH-66 Comanche and S-92. He retired from Sikorsky after twenty-seven years.
An accomplished handyman, Richard enjoyed maintaining and improving his properties up until two years ago. His other hobbies included reading, watching boxing, numismatics, history and preserving the memory of his ancestors. He always looked forward to visiting family in England and Colombia and having coffee with friends.
He was a rock and guide to his children and beloved spouse of twenty-one years. He treasured their support, and enjoyed sharing long-distance news and memories of the children with their mother as his health declined. He was very appreciative of all the professional help he received from the doctors, nurses and home health aides from Nuvance Health and Hartford Healthcare.
Richard is survived by his wife, Ruth Jeannette (nee Fuentes) and his sons, Adrian (Georgia), Christopher (Illinois) and Oliver (Washington). In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren, Madison, Adrian Jr. and Bethany Loud.
