Richard was the son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Usher) Holmes. One of four children, he was predeceased by his sisters Dorothy, Sylvia and Genevieve. Richard was a native Cape Codder, born and raised in Barnstable Village and attended Barnstable High School. After graduation he entered the Marine Corp and served during the Korean War. When he returned, Richard moved to New York and began his career as an airplane mechanic with engine and airframe certification. Soon after, Richard moved to San Francisco and worked over 40 years for the former Trans World Airlines until his retirement. He returned to his beloved Cape Cod 10 years ago and settling in South Dennis.
Richard enjoyed the benefits of working for the airline and traveled worldwide. He and his close friends enjoyed hiking in the mountains and woods. One of his most enjoyable hikes was in the California Redwood Forest. He also enjoyed the beauty of the Cape Cod Beaches. He was always a very caring and adventurous spirit who was well loved by his family and friends.
Richard leaves behind his nephews Gerald J. Somers and Wayne Cahoon. He was predeceased by his close friend of several years, Kyoko Fulton.
A private burial honoring Richard’s service will take place at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
