Brewster, MA - Michael J. Smith, Jr. “Mike”, 82, passed away at his home on October 28, 2023, in Brewster, MA. He was born on October 23, 1941, in Worcester, MA, to the late Elizabeth (Gerety) and Michael Joseph Smith.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Eleanor (Lemay), with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage, as well as his son, Michael, and his wife, Amy, and their three children: Keegan, Cara, and Sean, and his daughter, Brenna, and her husband, John, and their three children: Katherine, Jack, and Ella. Mike is also survived by his dearly loved brother Steven and his sister Betsy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brother, Peter F. Smith.
Mike embodied a unique blend of compassion and resilience, earning him widespread affection for his warm, genuine nature and steadfast character. A loyal friend to many, his life was defined by a deep commitment to service. His unwavering dedication to his family served as the cornerstone of his life leaving behind a legacy of love, friendship, and his legendary firm handshake. His profound connection with his faithful canine companion, Seamus, brought immeasurable joy to his days.
Mike attended Classical High School in Worcester, MA, and later graduated from the University of Massachusetts. He went on to pursue his graduate studies at American University.
Mike served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Army from March 1961 to 1964. Following his military service, Mike embarked on a remarkable 28-year career with the FBI. As a Supervisory Special Agent, he made significant contributions to the field. His exemplary work earned several commendations from both FBI headquarters and the United States Attorney's office. Mike was a true collaborator, known for his exceptional leadership and ability to build alliances within the agency and across different sectors.
Fondly known as “Joe” to his adored grandchildren, Mike was a dedicated grandfather, who lovingly referred to his six grandkids as “the little people.” He cherished them deeply, spending countless rides in his Dodge Dakota to Dunkin Donuts and on the sidelines, cheering them on during their various pursuits. Additionally, he had a passion for running and completed several Boston Marathons and the JFK 50 Mile Ultra-Marathon. Mike also found a deep and meaningful sense of purpose in service and community. He was a dedicated supporter of the Cape & Islands Police K-9 Relief Fund, leaving a lasting impact on the causes he held dear. In addition, he found immense joy riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and felt the incredible freedom of the open road (and unlimited cell phone minutes). Mike also relished tranquil moments by the water, with fishing excursions in the Cape Cod Canal.
Mike found solace through his unwavering Catholic faith.
A memorial service to celebrate Mike's life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Grace in Chatham, MA (60 Meetinghouse Rd, South Chatham, MA 02659).
