Harold J. Manley, born July 7, 1930, passed away November 18, 2017 following a stroke. He was married for 55 years to his college sweetheart, the late Dorothy Daisy Weston. A beloved, gentle leader of his family, he leaves three children, Carolyn H. Patkowski of Centerville, Elise Manley-Frangos of Marion, her husband Paul A. Frangos and his son, David C. Manley of West Boylston. He leaves 7 grandchildren: Christina Frangos, Evan Frangos and Lydia Frangos-Norris, Julia and Alexander Patkowski, Dorothy and Leigh Manley. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Staten Island, Harry graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Physics and MS in Electrical Engineering. He served our nation as a Air Force 2nd Lieutenant working as a cryptographer of secure voice technology during the Korean War which forged his future career. Harold earned an Engineer's Degree from Stanford University in 1968. He worked for 36 years as an engineer and Director of Business Development for General Telephone and Electronics. Harry and his team won 9 patent awards for the development of secure communications technology. Referred to by engineers and scientists as "Father Manley," he actively cultivated the promise of others. At 59, Harry retired from GTE and traveled the world with Dorothy, enjoyed his family, gardening and cooking at his Cape Cod home. He tutored disadvantaged adolescents in mathematics and was a lifelong WPI enthusiast. A voracious reader, patriot, skilled sailor and skier, Harry was at heart a generous, warm teacher who loved learning and his extended family and friends. He will be remembered for his wit, warmth and kindness.
Friends and family will gather for a wake at Doane, Beal and Ames, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, MA on Friday, November 24th from 8:30 to 9:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10am at St. Pius X Church in S. Yarmouth, followed by internment at Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.
