Stella DeTerra (Avila) Carrier

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Rose (Moniz) Avila she lived most of her life in Dartmouth.

Stella graduated from New Bedford High School and later Kinyon-Campbell Secretarial School. She was a member of several area churches including First Church of the Nazarene, International Church of the Nazarene, the First Portuguese Baptist Church and South Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carrier worked as an inspector at Cliftex and later worked at Cornell Dublier until 1968. She last worked at Reliable Homes as an office worker retiring in 1975.

Stella was a very active member for the former South Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Dartmouth Chorus, “Keynotes”. She was a member of the Pastoral Committee, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Friendship Circle. Mrs. Carrier was a volunteer for Market Ministries. She was a delegate for Old Colony Association and she was a volunteer for the Citizens of Dartmouth Elderly.

Mrs. Carrier was one of the founders of the Dartmouth Band Parents under Mr. Robitaille and Mr. Deroches in the 1950’s, where she acted as secretary for several years. She was a member of the Low Tide Yacht Club, the Dartmouth Council on Aging.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Carrier of Dartmouth, a son-in-law Raymond Maitoza of Dartmouth; a son, Manuel DeTerra of AZ; her grandchildren, Raymond Maitoza and Michael Maitoza, and Christine Aspin; great grandchildren, Alyssa, Joshua, Andrew, and Jacob. She was the mother to the late Richard Carrier, Jerry Carrier, Joyce Everly, and Dawn Maitoza. She was the sister of the late Hilda Costa, Leal Avila, and Henry Avila.

Her Visitation will be Saturday, December 7, 2024 9-10 a.m. with a service at 10 a.m in Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748. Burial will be private.
