Mary M. Correia

Maria (Mary) deDeus Correia, age 84, of Dartmouth Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday January 30, 2022. Mary was born on August 30, 1937 in Povocao, Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal. She traveled with her mother on a boat named “Roma”, at the young age of one to New York, before arriving at their final destination in New Bedford. Mary grew up in New Bedford, MA along with her three brothers until she and her husband purchased their home in Dartmouth, MA in 1994. She was the daughter of the late Francisco J. Medeiros and Albertina (Carreiro) Medeiros. She was the wife of Luis Correia, to which they are in their 63rd year of loving marriage. In addition to her loving husband Luis, she is survived by her children, Susan Marie Dutra of Dartmouth, Tina Louise-Correia of New Bedford and her boyfriend Steve Lowit and Stephanie Kirby and her husband James of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Jessica Alvernaz, Leslie Botelho and her husband Tom, Jameson Luis Kirby and Kennedy Brooke Kirby; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Botelho III and Sophia Botelho; a brother, Daniel Medeiros of New Bedford and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward and David Medeiros.

Mary attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Grammar School, and was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She graduated from New Bedford High School with a scholarship in Portuguese and was a member of the GAMS. A few years after graduating, she met her husband, Luis, at a Portuguese dance club named Lincoln Hall.

Mary was employed as a secretary at St. Luke's Hospital, until becoming a homemaker and raising her three daughters whom she cherished dearly. In her free time, Mary enjoyed traveling on bus tours and watching Portuguese soap operas with her beloved husband. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, and reading. She loved to play bingo and was a member of the South End Golden Ages. Mary spent time solving crossword puzzles, watching you-tube cooking videos, and baking. She was best known for her Russian Apricot Chicken dish, which she would bring to family gatherings. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mary loved her family dearly, she especially enjoyed playing games, checkers, and cards with her grandchildren. She also cherished the times she spent with her great-grandchildren. She was extremely witty and funny. She loved to laugh and be happy. Family was everything to her.
