Born in St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Jose DeMello and Mary (Soares) Mello, he immigrated to New Bedford at the age of 13 and moved to Dartmouth ten years ago.
He was the owner and operator of the former restaurants, J&J Melo’s Lunch and Craig’s Place both on Brock Avenue, CJ’s Galley on Cove Road, and the Parkwood House on Acushnet Avenue all in New Bedford before retiring in 2001. He also operated the grill room at the Allendale Country Club in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Mr. Mello was the former president of the Portuguese Sports Club in New Bedford. He enjoyed watching his sons coach football and his grandsons play as well as watching his granddaughters cheer.
In addition to his life partner he is survived by two sons; Dr. Curtis J. Mello and his wife Patricia of Tiverton, Craig A. Mello and his wife Doreen of Dartmouth, one daughter; Sherrilynn M. Conklin and her husband Robert of Acushnet, four brothers; Edward Mello and Joseph I. Mello and his wife Odelia all of Dartmouth, Gilbert I. “Gilly” Mello and his wife Maria of Acushnet, Dennis I. Mello and his wife Elizabeth of Florida, one sister; Edwarda C. “Edie” Souza and her husband David of Acushnet, seven grandchildren: Kraig, Cory, Randilynn, Chad, Eileen, Michael, and Michaela, and many nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Honorato I. “Tiny” Mello and Mary C. Farias.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 9:30AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at Dartmouth 230 Russells Mills Rd. Dartmouth, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Rivet St. in New Bedford. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. Burial in St. John's Cemetery.
