Dearly loved Russell L. Roberts passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Providence Hospice Care Center in Everett. Russ was born in Ridgefield, WA, May 6, 1941, to Lyle and Mary Roberts. The family moved to Spokane when Russ was 11 and in 1959, he graduated from John Rogers High School.
Russ was in the Army, 1959-1962, in Karlsruhe, Germany. He attended WSU in 1963-1965. Russ married Phyllis Bordwell on July 31, 1965. They settled in Snohomish where she was teaching. He graduated from the UW in 1967 and taught history at SHS where he created a You and the Law class that became the choice of most seniors. In 1982 Russ taught PE at Valley View and transferred in 1990 to the Freshman Campus. He coached football, basketball, soccer, tennis, softball and golf. Russ was an inspirational teacher and coach for 30 years and mentored many young teachers and coaches. An innovative teacher; he was always respected for his high standards and kindness in the classroom. He was named Washington State PE Teacher of the year in 1993.
Russ was a loving father to his children and enjoyed teaching them in school. Now, Ken teaches at Snohomish High School, Ann at Centennial Middle School and David at Cascade High School in Everett. Retiring in 1997, Russ and Phyllis taught two years at the American School of Warsaw, Poland. In 2001, they moved to China where Russ taught AP Economics for the Shanghai American School. They taught a total a 4 years in China. In 2009, Russ developed an American elementary through high school affiliated with Beijing Tsinghua University.
Family was most important to Russ. He is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis; Children: Ken and Kiffen Roberts, Ann and Blaine McNeil, David and Trish Roberts all of Snohomish. From the day each was born, Papa delighted in his 7 grandchildren: Emmalee, Jenna, and Jake McNeil, Annika, Katrina, Jaxon and Revy Roberts. He had one sister, Louise and 5 brothers: Ed, Jack, Ron, Wes and Denny. He loved all his nieces and nephews and their parents. He attended Snohomish First Baptist and Crossview Community Church.
A Celebration of Russ’s wonderful life will be held July 20 at 11 a.m. at Swans Trail Farm, 7301 Rivershore Road, Snohomish. Memorials may be made to the Russ Roberts Memorial Scholarship thru the Snohomish Education Foundation, 21 Avenue A, Suite 6, Snohomish, WA 98290. Our family is grateful for the amazing care givers on Floor 7 of Providence Hospital and the Hospice Care Center.
