Doris Pearl Muller of Snohomish, Washington, affectionately known as Gramma D, passed away June 18th, 2024, at the age of 81, from complications related to metastatic cancer. She was born on January 9th, 1943, to Lucy Mary McCormick Muller and Martin Elmer Muller in Beach, North Dakota. Her family moved to the Bitterroot Valley of Montana in1949.
After suffering a bout of polio at age 15, Doris grew interested in nursing and became the youngest nurse's assistant at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, Montana. She graduated from Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Montana, in 1961 as class Valedictorian and received the Ravalli County Nurses Scholarship. Doris earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, with honors, from Montana State University in 1965.
Doris worked in various departments – surgery, neonatal and the emergency room at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton and Community Hospital in Missoula, Montana. She was very compassionate and a mentor to her co-workers. Her patient’s often described her as “the best nurse they ever had.” One patient in particular, a young local firefighter named Mick, fell in love with this talented and beautiful caregiver. She married Walter Michael Iten in September 1965 in Hamilton, Montana. They had three children, Michelle, Rhonda and Michael. Doris was loved by all who knew her. She was a true inspiration and led a life of giving and volunteerism. She touched many lives with her compassion and kindness and gave of herself to those who needed her help. She had a resilience and strength that carried her through many life challenges.
She led a life of service. She served with Samaritan’s Purse World Medical Mission providing care in Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. Another mission trip led her to Haiti and Ethiopia with the World Mission Alliance. She traveled to Israel on mission trips and worked as a nurse with the African Children’s Choir here in the US.
Doris had a playful, youthful spirit and loved kids. She was known by her children as the “baby whisperer.” It brought her joy to work at the children’s play area in Fred Meyer and to be involved with the children’s ministry with The Pursuit NW. “Gramma D” was always laughing and could often be found playing games with her grandkids. It was guaranteed she would be the first one in the water when they were at the lake together!
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary McEntire, brother Gerald Muller and grandson, Dawson Baroh. She is survived by children Michelle Baroh (Sanford), Rhonda Iten (Kerry) and Michael Iten (Shelley), grandchildren Riley Baroh (Kendall), Mikayla and Kennadi Iten, Finn Halligan, great-granddaughter, June Baroh, sister Helen Meadows, brothers David and Martin Muller and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is holding a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers Doris
