Marie Assefille Jean

It was a lovely Wednesday, July 16, 1930 in Latranblay city of Plaine du cul de sac, Haiti that Marie Assefille Jean was born to Justin Jean and Lamercy Henry Jean. She had 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Growing up, she was known as a master Seamstress in her hometown, designing everything from wedding dresses to school uniforms.

Assefille also known as Gran-Fifi or Grammi later had 3 children of her own. 2 boys and 1 girl Marie Lourdes who is with us today. In 1984 Gran-Fifi moved to the U.S. while continuing to do what she loved best, sew. If you knew her, you or your children has likely worn one of her designs. She would see a dress, be inspired, go into her room and come out a few hours later with a custom hand sewn fitted outfit.

Gran-Fifi was soft-spoken in public settings but had lots of somber and funny stories to share with family and friends of her life in Haiti. She was a quiet comedian and her distinguish laugh was, in itself, amusing!

She helped raised her 5 grandchildren who were often awaken by her reading the bible and praying.

On December 1, 2020 our beloved Gran-Fifi transitioned to eternity in her sleep. We are all grateful for the 90 years of memories created with Grammi! She left behind her daughter Marie Lourdes, 5 grandchildren Lynda, Emmanuella, Josue, Lucile and Ann Roselande, 8 great grandchildren Dhiandra, Leiyana, Ysrael, Janaiah, Chloè, Jeremiah, Adele, and Elias. We love you and thank you for the love you’ve shown us through the years. Til we meet again!

Gran-Fifi se te yon moun ki pa pale trop lè li nan public, men lèli lakay ak fanmi li, li touye nou ak bèl blag ak istwa de lè li tean Ayiti. Grann-Fifi se te yon komedyèn, e fason li ri sufi pou feou ri tou.
