Christy Haynes Gunter

Christy Haynes Gunter, aged 81, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, in Lilburn, Georgia. Born on April 21, 1943, in Cullman, Alabama, Christy was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and friend whose life was marked by her warmth, humor, and dedication to her family.

Christy graduated from Auburn University in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in Journalism, a field that fueled her passion for politics. Her career took her to Washington, D.C., and later to Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked for WSB and met her husband, Howard Gunter, Jr. The couple shared 56 wonderful years together until Howard's passing November 1st. They welcomed their daughter, Catherine, in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1972, before moving to Tampa, Florida, and Asheville, North Carolina, where Christy developed a deep affection for the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1980, they settled in Georgia, where Christy worked as an HR and Office Manager until her retirement.

Christy was a devoted and loving mother to Catherine Gunter of Monroe, Georgia, and a cherished sister to Gail McCullers (Richard) of Auburn, Alabama, and James 'Jiggs' Haynes, Jr. (Rheada) of Hernando, Mississippi. She is also survived by her nieces, Collie Wells (Steve) of Prattville, Alabama, and Jacque Middleton (Jonathan) of Auburn, Alabama, and their children, Nate and Molly Cate, respectively, and cousins, Bill and Rosita Gunter of Atlanta, Georgia. Christy was preceded in death by her parents, Euel and Vileta Haynes, husband, Howard, and her nephew, Mark McCullers.

Her life was enriched by her love for reading, genealogy, Auburn Tigers Football, and her cats, Mac and Claire. Christy will be remembered for her unique gift-giving, her joy in Christmas celebrations, and her wonderful sense of humor. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, cherished by many cousins, friends, and family across the United States.

A caring cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests donations to a favorite charity be made in Christy's name.
