THELMA ELAINE MORRISON
NOVEMBER 21, 1921—DECEMBER 13, 2018
Thelma Elaine Morrison was born In Georgetown, Guyana on November 21, 1921, the child of George and Elma English. During her early and young adult years, Thelma lived on Hadfield Street, Lodge, before marrying her husband, Henry Ivan Morrison, (deceased) of 25 years. The marriage produced six children: Cicely (deceased), Lynette, Audrey, Myrna (deceased), Edward, and Alfred.
It was Thelma’s dream to become a school teacher, but the early passing of her mother in her early forties thwarted her dreams as she had to take on the role of “big sister” and mother to her younger siblings--Bernice, Grace and Leonard (deceased).
Thelma lived a rich, long, life as a homemaker and mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and special friend to many. She unselfishly, caringly, and lovingly enjoyed the various roles she performed…always giving, providing, and sharing what she had with others. She loved sewing and made all of her children’s clothing; in addition, she cooked and baked the finest cakes, breads, pastries and other delicacies. She had a rich singing voice even into her nineties, and was always competing with one of her daughters when singing in the coloratura and soprano vocal ranges, sustaining a comfortable pitch level for a prolonged period without any obvious strain.
Thelma immigrated to the United States in the nineteen eighties. She adored her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren who were separated by many miles. Nevertheless, she remained the matriarch of the Morrison family.
Thelma was a devout woman of faith. She could often be heard singing one of her favorite hymns: “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.”
As her health declined, she continued to find joy by singing, praying, and praising God. Thelma could be seen reclining in her chair with eyes closed and the most beautiful smile on her face as if she were envisioning a heavenly manifestation. When asked what she was smiling about, with eyes closed, she would respond, "I’m talking with my Jesus.”
Along with her surviving children, Thelma leaves her cherished memory with her sister, Bernice Braithwaite; daughter-in-laws, Sharon Morrison, Margaret Fraser-Morrison; son-in-law, Stanley Champagnie; grandchildren--Nicole, Marcia, Ryan and Paula Morrison, Michelle Morrison-DeViera and Gary DeViera, Dion, Jasmine, and Denay Morrison; great-grandchildren, Jadis, Nathan, Yohan, Sofia, Kingsley, Ava, and Skylar; beloved cousin, Cynthia Padmore, and devoted nieces, nephews, relatives, and close friends.
