Rosalie (Kaplan) Sporn, mother to Leslie Sporn-Symonds (Philip), Daniel Sporn (Sharon), and Jeffrey Sporn (Melissa), passed away peacefully in her place of residence in Bethesda, Maryland, on February 24th, 2024. She was surrounded personally, virtually, and spiritually by those who knew and loved her.
Rosalie was born in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of three children. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, where she met her husband Eugene, whom she married on her 21st birthday, in 1948. In addition to raising three children, she was an accomplished translator in her work with the State Department, and completed her working career as the Regional Administrator of the DC/MD/VA branches of the Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Center. Known for her intelligence, wit, compassion, and belief that all men and women deserve the same opportunities in life, she was readily adored by those who knew her. She will be remembered for her love of family, of life, and for the unconditional support she provided to all. In addition to her children, she is survived by eight beautiful grandchildren: Tamara (Ben), Erica, Emily (Stu), Zachary, Gabriel, Julianna, Samantha, and Eli. Rosalie was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Eugene, her devoted partner Marty, and her brothers Sidney and Stanley.
A funeral service will take place at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda on Thursday, February 29th, at 10 AM, with burial at King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church at Noon. Shiva will take place at Jeff’s house in McLean, VA at 6:30 PM, with minyan at 7:30. Memorial gifts are welcome to your charity of choice but not necessary. Rosalie was active in and supportive of the efforts of the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, Makom (formerly Jewish Foundation for Group Homes), and Congregation Beth El of Montgomery County. The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful caregivers who supported Rosalie like family, and to the peaceful passing afforded by Hospice in her final days – we will forever be grateful.
