Robert Hauptman of Silver Spring, MD passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 28, 2018 (age 93). Bob was a long time resident of Silver Spring, Maryland. He is survived by three children from his first marriage to the late Anna Roth Hauptman; Jean Garcia, Debra Kupfer (David), and Harvey Hauptman (Sharon Linthicum). He is also survived by his wife Maxine Lewack and her children, Larry Lewack (Peggy McDonald), Sandy Lewack-Felton, Steven Lewack (Sandy King) and Stewart Lewack; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Bob was born and raised in New York and moved to Maryland where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was an engineer and worked for a number of years at MITRE Corporation.
During midlife Bob enjoyed travel with his wife Maxine and spending time with friends. He had a keen interest in current events and politics and at the age of 90 established a discussion group that met weekly to deliberate topics. Until recently he was still challenging his local bridge group and he never turned down a chance to play a rousing game of Hearts or Scrabble. He was proud of the work that he did with RESET (Raising Excitement for Science, Engineering, & Technology); a District of Columbia program established to introduce young children to the concepts and ideas of science and engineering. He volunteered with RESET by developing short topics and lessons that would engage and pique the interest of kindergarten age to 2nd grade children. For many years Bob also volunteered for the Metropolitan Washington Ear where he recorded his readings of select columns from daily newspapers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904. The service will be followed by a light lunch.
