Rani Karunaratne, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at her home in Potomac, Maryland, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at the age of 83. She leaves a loving legacy through her children and their spouses, Nilan, Ashley, Himashi, and Rafael, as well as her five grandchildren, Madison, Paige, Nylah, Olivia, and Shay. Predeceased by her husband Anura, to whom she was married for 39 joyful years, Rani is also survived by her sister Padmini, brother Ranjith, sister-in-law Prasadi, and numerous adored nieces, nephews, as well as many cherished friends.
Born in Sri Lanka, Rani emigrated to the United States in 1969 with Anura, where they established their family and careers. For many years, Rani was a valued employee at M&T Bank, where she formed enduring friendships and was beloved by her colleagues and customers alike. A devout Buddhist, she actively supported local temples and meditation centers.
Renowned for her exceptional hospitality, Rani frequently welcomed relatives from Sri Lanka, students studying in the U.S., and new residents to the area into her home. Her gatherings were memorable, fostering a sense of community among the Sri Lankans in the D.C. metro area. Her infectious laughter and warm spirit made everyone feel at home.
In her final years, Rani received compassionate care at home from her loving niece Nanda and aides Anna and Amanda, to whom the family extends eternal gratitude. As the heart and soul of her family, Rani's presence will be profoundly missed.
Friends and loved ones are invited to gather on Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Sunday, May 5th, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a Buddhist Vihara in her memory.
