Shocked, at the news, I - well, there's not much, no, there's nothing one can say. My condolences! I mean, you don't get over it, you...just get through...it. We never got to meet - and that might sound weird - but, NARA has a great, internal, social media network, and through that - here in Denver - I always felt I knew him, from his comforting me in my baby and then toddler experiences, to sharing music interests and thoughts and whatnot. I'm so, so sorry for your loss...

"A is for AMY who fell down the stairs, B is for BASIL assaulted by bears…” My brother-in-law, Jeff, adored dark humor and Edward Gorey’s work (the quote above is from his humorously dark illustrated book, Amphigorey). He proudly acknowledged his inner misanthrope and had little faith in humanity as a whole, but he fiercely and devotedly adored his friends and his family (and shark teeth and trilobites). If you asked Jeff for some of his famous chicken soup, he would bring four gallons and an enormous tub of matzoh balls so that you would have easily accessible Jewish comfort food for the next six months. The whole family loved visiting Hawaii as often as they could, and when they couldn’t be there in person, Jeff would ship in fragrant leis for special occasions. As far back as I can remember, Jeff was almost always clad in a Hawaiian shirt, camera or cuisine in hand. Jeff was the kind of guy that if you mentioned in passing that you were feeling sad because of a breakup, he and your sister would buy two bottles of your favorite pomegranate cordial and schlep four hours in the middle of the night to Pittsburgh to drop it off and then head home again, mission accomplished, no need to talk, but something tangible left behind so you knew you were loved. He was the proudest papa to his daughter, Ariella, now fourteen, bequeathing his incredible intellect, his love of nature and science, and his pointed sarcasm. And he unreservedly loved my sister, Rachel. I first met Jeff at my parents’ house when I was just in high school and he was part of Rachel’s visiting college buddy group, and though they were “only friends” back then, I could tell by the way he looked at her when her head was turned how much he admired her, both now and then. Jeff, his darkly humorous snark, and his great kindness will be sorely missed.

I remember Jeffrey's smile like it was yesterday, but it was many many years ago. It sounds like he grew up to be a talented writer and beloved father and husband. Sending warmth, light and comfort to the Weiss family.

I met Jeff about two years ago at NARA. Jeff was always willing to help at work and his love for his family and daughter was clear with all of the wonderful pictures around his desk. Jeff will be missed. Everyone is in my thoughts. 

Rachel’s sister here. Jeff’s funeral will be at 10 am on Sunday, September 19th at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney MD.

Jeff was a kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. Words can't express how sorry I am for your loss. May memories of Jeff and the love of family surround you and give you strength in the days ahead.
