George F Blatt

George Frederic Blatt, nickname: Sir or Mr. Blatt, Sir, 84, of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Jersey City, NJ, died in Rockville, MD on May 18, 2021 after a prolonged battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He is survived by his wife, Gail (Pruss) Blatt of Silver Spring, MD; his children, David Blatt, (spouse: Fred Hosier) and Daniel Blatt and his grandson, Zachary George Blatt.

Born in Jersey City, NJ in 1936 and preceded in death by his father, Isidor in 1941 and his mother Edith in 1966, Mr. Blatt developed a passion for photography, target shooting and German sports cars at an early age.

He served as the photographer for his high school newspaper, attended Rutgers University and graduated from Long Island University. He enlisted in the Army, his service distinguished by successfully lobbying the officers at Fort Dix to allow a buck Private to bring his 1960 Porsche 356B to Basic Training.

In 1961 he married Gail Pruss of Arlington, VA, began a family in NJ, then moved to Silver Spring, MD in 1967.

With a background in chemistry, he began his life-long career with the FDA, initially serving as an Inspector, and retiring as the Chief of the FDA’s Health Fraud Staff, a group chartered with finding and investigating fraud in pharmaceutical trials, in 1991.

Perhaps the proximity to the Chesapeake Bay was the catalyst for his love of sailing and being on the water. He and his sons spent many weekends, and more than a few Jewish holidays, sailing. “God is on the Chesapeake Bay. We don’t need to go to services.”

If alive today, he would be highly critical of this obituary, citing numerous inaccuracies and grammatical errors.

A private burial service will take place at the Gardens of Remembrance Cemetery in Clarksburg, MD.
