January 17, 1937- December 26, 2015
On the evening of Saturday, December 26, 2015 Elizabeth Anne Broderick, 77, of Greenbelt, MD passed away peacefully while surrounded by family. “Betty” is survived by her devoted husband Joseph Shapley Broderick; her four children, Daniel Joseph Broderick, Judy Broderick Wade, Debora Anne Broderick, and John Anthony Broderick; son-in-laws, Steven Hessler and Sean Wade, daughter in-law, Kerry Broderick; and her eight grandchildren—Allison, Mary, & Katherine Wade; Isabel & Hope Hessler; Jacob, Gavin & Nathan Broderick. She is also survived by her two siblings, Martha Loftus and Joseph Smith.
Betty was born on January 17, 1937 in Cambridge Massachusetts, the second of three children born to Catherine Anne and Joseph Arthur Smith. She grew up in Cambridge and spent her summers in Rye Beach, New Hampshire where she met her husband, Joe, when she was sixteen years old. Joe and Betty married in 1962 and celebrated their 53rd Anniversary in November of 2015. They moved to the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. in 1963, where they raised their family and have lived ever since. The Broderick’s returned to Rye Beach with their family each year for summer vacations—Betty never lost her taste for New England lobster! In addition to raising her family and taking care of the home, Betty was involved with all her children’s many activities and volunteered much of her time in those early years to the local swim team. In later years, Betty explored her interest in the arts, and became a prolific stained glass artist, who showed her work at many art and craft shows. Betty also loved to embroider—she created countless beautifully embroidered tablecloths that were a staple at the delicious Broderick holiday meals. In her last years, Betty enjoyed seeing her grandchildren grow and hearing about their lives—each time they came to visit, her face lit up with joy. We will all miss Betty’s beautiful smile and her kind and generous heart.
Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 10AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 2900 Olney Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD. Committal Service will be held following the Mass at 11:30AM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD.
Special thanks to the staff of Brooke Grove Retirement Village for their loving care of Elizabeth during her last years.
