Charles Hervey “Doug” Douglass, Jr. was born in Birmingham, Alabama on January 11th, 1949 to Charles Hervey and Mary Minge Douglass. He was one of three children with his sister Melville and brother Richard. Early in life he moved with his family to San Antonio, Texas, then back to Montgomery, Alabama where he spent most of his childhood. He attended Sewanee, the University of the South, in Tennessee and majored in Chemistry. In 1970 while attending a summer internship program at Argonne National Laboratory, he met Anne Stephanie Ritger, and the two were married March 29th, 1971.
Doug and Anne moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he attended the University of Minnesota graduating with a PhD in Chemistry in 1975. He then became a professor at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and Trinity College in Washington DC before working as a researcher and project manager for the Navy.
Doug and Anne are the proud parents of five children, Charles, Michael, Katherine, Elizabeth and Stephanie and adoring grandparents to 12 grandchildren, Thomas, Gabriel, Steven, Emily, Matthew, James, Kevin, Samuel and quadruplets Ryan, Charlotte, Andrea, Jacob.
Doug was extremely devoted to his family, community and church, acting as a member of Oakview Pool Board, a MCSL Swim league official, as well as supporting the many activities of his children including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cross Country, Soccer, Band, Orchestra, Dance and anything else that his children or family needed. He loved sports, and was a lifelong fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the San Francisco Giants. Doug and Anne also took up ballroom dancing, achieving Arthur Murray Bronze Level I. He was also a longtime member of St. Camillus Catholic Church. After a long illness, Doug died peacefully surrounded by his family on September 8th, 2021.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Doug’s life will be held on Monday, September 13th at 11:00 AM at St. Camillus Catholic Church, 1600 St. Camillus Drive, Silver Spring MD 20903 with a graveside service to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring MD, 20906.
