Roy Dale Evans, Jr. was born on September 23, 1931 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Roy Dale, Sr. and Mildred Evans. Roy was their only child. Roy went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 31, 2022 in Grapevine, Texas.
Roy grew up attending Queensborough Baptist Church and accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at the age of ten. This was also where he met the love of his life, Dolores, who also grew up attending Queensborough. Roy attended Fair Park High School, and after graduation, he attended Louisiana Tech University where he was a member of ROTC. Roy graduated from Tech with a business degree and with a ROTC commission, after which he and Dolores were married. He then served as an Air Traffic Controller in the United States Air Force, stationed in Dallas. After leaving the Air Force, Roy and Dolores returned to Shreveport where he started a career with Moore Business Forms and was co-owner of Evans Cleaners with his father. He also served as a lay music minister at Baptist churches in the Shreveport area.
After a few years, Roy felt called to full-time music ministry and moved to Fort Worth, Texas, to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Church Music, later to return for his Masters degree. Roy's ministry extended over 50 years serving in a number of churches in Texas and Louisiana. He retired from full-time ministry in 1994 but continued to serve in part-time and interim positions for years after that. Roy, along with Dolores, were privileged to be a part of a mission trip to Holland with other music ministers and their wives in the late 60s. There they gave their testimonies, sang and rang handbells. Many lives were impacted by this endeavor, including theirs. Roy loved the Lord with all of his heart and lived his life serving Him. Upon seeing Jesus he probably heard "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
In addition to his devotion to church music, Roy was an avid tennis player, woodworker, and motorcyclist. He developed many long-term friendships in pursuit of these interests.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Greene Evans, his son, David Randall Evans, and his parents, Roy Dale Evans, Sr. and Mildred Thompson Evans.
He is survived by his daughter, Debra Evans Wood and her husband Curtis; Grandchildren, Kyle Wood and wife Jessica, Kaycee Von Essen and husband Mike, Ashley Evans Keller and husband Larry and daughter-in-law Kim Evans. He is also survived by five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Roy will be held Monday, February 7, 2022 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 PM. Officiating the service will be Bro. Glen Adkins.
Memorial gifts may be given to the music ministry of First Baptist Church of Shreveport.
