John attended Byrd High School and was a 1959 graduate. He later became a Journeyman Electrician and retired from Wilhite Electric Company in 2008. John was a 62 year member and officer of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 194 where he served as a Health and Welfare trustee and local president prior to his retirement. He was the current president of IBEW local 194 Retirees Club and was a member of the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.
John loved water sports. He especially loved taking his children and grandchildren jet-skiing and boating on the party barge. He enjoyed anything science fiction, ranging from novels, television series and movies. John was a 20 year member of the Red River Corvette Club and was very passionate about competing in the corvette car shows with Beverly and attending club parties and events. John was a very giving and thoughtful man. He even made time to donate blood at the Red Cross, which he had been doing for most of his adult life.
We will all miss his big strong hugs and broad wealth of knowledge.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Beverly Purdy Tyler; daughter, Susan Tyler Brown (Ralph); son, John Thomas Tyler (Gwen); grandchildren, Hannah Brown Hinchsliff (Jack), Philip Brown, Grace Brown, Mary Tyler Felty (Matt), Mattie Tyler Evans (Chase), Stafford Tyler and Teresa Tyler; great-grandchild, Roark Evans; and sisters, Betty Jo Tyler May and Patricia Tyler Johnson (Hershel).
John is preceded in death by his parents, “Tyler” and Thelma; and sisters, Katherine Tyler Tierney and Mary Elizabeth Tyler.
A visitation for John will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road Shreveport, Louisiana 71108, followed by a private family service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of John to the charity of your choice.
