John Kober

John was born November 29, 1916 in Sheboygan to Gottfried and Rose (Brach) Kober. At the age of ten his family moved to Minnesota where he attended a one-room schoolhouse in Sibley Co., graduating from the eighth grade. He was proud of the fact that he was the only paid player on the Lake Jennie Baseball Team in Minnesota.

In 1940 John returned to Sheboygan where he joined the Sheboygan Indians baseball team only to be cut short when he received his orders for the US Army. From 1942 to 1945 he served his country in Africa and Italy as a Corporal T5.

On November 13, 1942 John and Shirley Schirmer were united in marriage at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage. For thirty three years John was employed at Schultz Brothers Warehouse, retiring in 1978. Following retirement John and Shirley spent their winters in Winter Haven, Florida. After nearly sixty-three years of marriage, Shirley preceded him in death on October 25, 2005.

John enjoyed taking annual fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewers fan and enjoyed watching them play on TV.

He is survived by his son, Terry Jon Kober of Sheboygan; his daughter, Susan (Robert) Posey of Howards Grove; four grandchildren, Tracy Kober of San Diego, CA, Andrew Prevenas, Kaitlin Prevenas, and John Posey all of Howards Grove; one sister, Rose (Gordon) Carlson of Morgan, MN; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by infant twin sons, Terry John and Larry James; four brothers, David, Gottlieb, Chris, and Gottfried Kober; and three sisters, Emily and Marie Kober and Emily Totman.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 8, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at Ballhorn Chapels. Rev. Timothy J. Mech, Senior Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

John’s family would like extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful people at Sheboygan County Meals on Wheels who not only nourished his body, but also his soul. And many thanks to the staff at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their exceptional care.

John will always be remembered his great sense of humor.
