Edward was born on December 16,1942 in Casper, Wyoming to Walter and Wilma Gruenberg. When Edward was six months old, his family moved to Aruba where his father was an engineer at the Exxon refinery. Edward lived in Aruba until he left for University in Boulder, Colorado at the age of 18.
His formative years on the island fostered a lifelong love and fascination of the sea and all its creatures. As a teenager he would annually swim around the island with his friends, an accomplishment he was proud of all his life. He excelled at all water sports but particularly enjoyed spear fishing, snorkeling and fishing. He remained an avid fisherman and water enthusiast all his life.
Edward followed in his father’s footsteps and received his engineering degree from the University of Boulder. He began his career in California where he met the love of his life the former Lucy Joyce French. After a long and successful engineering career that took he and Joyce around the globe, it was no surprise that Edward and his beloved settled on the beach to enjoy their sunset years. He was known to always have a fishing rod in his hand on Holden Beach. He spent most days on the dock or on his boat the Lucy J. He loved to share his vast knowledge and expertise of the sea with neighbors and friends onshore and on water. His granddaughters and in later years, his great nieces and nephews were particularly blessed by his instruction and inspiration. He was an enthusiastic and loving teacher.
He will be forever remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.
Edward was predeceased by his wife Lucy Joyce Gruenberg in 2018 and daughter Marie Norton in 2023.
He is survived by daughter Pauline French, granddaughters Emily and Cameron Babich, son Steve Miller and sister Elaine Azcarate as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service will be held at Holden Beach Chapel on Monday, November 4, 2024 and the burial will be private.
