William Roy Gray Sr.


Roy’s love of the land, for gardening, hunting, and fishing has been handed down to 3 generations.  His children were taught to respect the land.  No trash of any kind was to be left behind when hunting or fishing. He took his children and grandchildren hunting and fishing from an early age.  They were all taught how to make venison sausage with his special recipe.

 He had a garden every year.  One year it was time to plant the garden and he had had surgery on his foot.  The window next to his bed looked out at the garden.  As his wife and children were getting the garden ready to plant, he called out orders and instructions from his bed.

He worked long & hard to provide for his family.  In his early years, he did welding jobs, made sausage, and operated a barbecue stand next to Reinhard’s Grocery on the weekends.  He retired after     years Civil Service at Randolph AFB working in the Hydraulic Department.

After retirement, he did custom hay cutting and baling and raised cattle.  He loved riding the tractor, plowing, planting, harvesting, baling hay and raising cattle.

He served on the Church Council at St. John’s and refurbished the pews when the church moved to this location.  He thought the lighted cross over the altar was the most beautiful cross he had ever seen.

He always believed a man’s word was his bond & conducted his business dealings with his word and a hand shake.

His reputation and good name were very important to him.  If he had to leave town for business or vacation, he would always make sure his bills were paid first.  In the early 50’s he was very proud of the fact that he could obtain a loan at the bank on his signature only – no collateral required.

Today all his pain is gone, he is reunited with the love of his life, Liz, and they are dancing to his favorite song – Jole Blon.

He will always be "Mr. Gray" to me. He was so charming and so gentlemanly. I asked him to farm my place for me until he couldn't do it anymore, and he was proud to agree with me that he did. I could always trust his advice on anything, and he would always start off with ... "Weeellll, Diana, I don't want to tell you what to do and how to do things ..." So polite. I will miss that drawl and his wit, and we will all miss him greatly.

Dear Roy, Marilyn and Margorie,
Pat and I wanted to express our sincere sorrow for the loss of W.R.  Some people you just never forget because of their kindness exhibited to you.  Your dad was one of those .  He always had time for me when I was young, and he continued that caring to both Pat and me throughout the years.  We are extremely sorry we were not able to attend the viewing or the funeral, but do not think that our thoughts were not with W.R. and the rest of his fine family.  Maybe he will have a good laugh and remenence about the cattle lease with old man Art.  We know that being with Liz will warm his heart again.

Dear Magorie, Roy and William:
It seems that the only time we hear about people that we grew up with is when one of their parents pass away. When I read about your  Dad memories from our days at St. Johns came flooding back into my mind. Know that your father has gone on to be with God and has now recieved that home in heaven and has gone to be with your Mom.You can be assured that  your Dad is walking the streets of heaven and will be waiting there for you when the time comes.
