Charlie was born on September 9, 1917 in Port Arthur, Texas to Thomas Snipes Richey and Margaret Ruth Richey and graduated from Beaumont High School. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served during the war as an Airplane Mechanic and Flight Engineer. He continued that line of work as a civilian while he worked on a degree from Texas Lutheran University majoring in math and history and receiving an all level teaching certification. A Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance from Southwest Texas State University enabled his position in Civil Service as the Base Education Officer at Randolph Air Force Base--a job he enjoyed until his retirement in 1973.
A man of deep faith who believed in helping wherever needed, Charlie could be found at every corner of the First United Methodist Church. From Sunday School teacher, devoted choir member, song leader in his beloved Paulist Sunday School class, youth leader, bus driver, plumber, Mr. Fixit --Charlie did it all. He was at Seguin Assisted living and Argent Court every Monday leading Sunday School lessons for the residents. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over fifty years, and volunteered with the hospital auxiliary for almost 30 years.
He enjoyed camping, trailer rallies, singing with the Mid Texas chorus, square dancing, water skiing, gardening, telling stories, riding his lawn mower, eating moon pies and the all around enjoyment of life.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Stanford Richey (Faye), Alvan Richey (Bess and Lottie), Virginia Senyk (Joe), Frank Richey, and Margaret Peterson (Harold), and his grandson, Daryl Richey.
He is survived by Lorraine, his wife of 72 years; his sons Don (Joyce) and Tom (Theresa); grandchildren Leanne Boddie (Bryce), Margaret Rauch (Brian), and Tom Richey, Jr. (Jodi); two great grandchildren Endie Boddie and Makeda Boddie; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Pall bearers will be Eric Aufderhaar, Dan Pfeil, George Nisson, Bryce Boddie, Brian Rauch, and Tom Richey, Jr. Honorary Pall Bearers are members of the Paulist Sunday School class.
