Sheryl McElheny died surrounded by her family on Friday, April 9, 2021, in Seattle, Washington at age 73. She was born March 25, 1948, in Rochester, New York, one of five daughters of Robert and Katherine McElheny.
With her incredible energy and enthusiasm for life, Sheryl will be remembered for many things, but especially for the boundless love she blanketed over everyone who was blessed to have crossed her path.
Sheryl embraced life with a flair and every day was a new adventure to her. Her extensive travels took her all over the United States, as well as to distant lands, and countless visits to her second home in Abiko, Japan, where she also formed many special life-long friendships.
Sheryl valued spontaneity; loved culture and sports; and was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Alfred University. She worked as a nurse for fifty years. For many years she was the charge nurse of the rehab unit at Swedish Hospital where she gave so much to thousands of patients and was considered by her colleagues as their greatest leader for decades.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Kate McSky, and brother-in-law Mike Geiss. Sheryl is survived by her husband, Seiji Yokoyama; daughter, Amy “Marchella” Yokoyama; son Simon Yokoyama; three sisters, Sandy Geiss of Clayton, New York; Karen (Mike) Blum of San Luis Obispo, California; and Judy (Ken) Owen of Piqua, Ohio; and many beloved nieces, nephews, chosen family members, and friends.
A private Zoom memorial service for the immediate family took place Sunday, April 11th. An in-person celebration of Sheryl’s life will take place in Seattle, Washington at a future date, still to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to St Paul's United Church of Christ in Ballard: https://stpucc.org or Washington State Nurses Foundation: https://www.wanursesfoundation.org
