Rochelle Reingold was born in 1938 in the Bronx, New York City. She was a loving wife to Jesse Reingold, a wonderful mother to her sons Leonard, Jonathan, and James, and a doting grandmother to Kendall, Sophie, Michelle, Aaron, Allyson and Drake. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the center of her life.
In an era when attending college was rare for women, and exceedingly rare for young Jewish women from her neighborhood, Rochelle graduated from Hunter College in Manhattan. Hunter College had yet to merge with City University of New York and was still a women’s college with a long history as a teacher’s college. Rochelle was surprised when her classmates expected her to drop out when she married after her junior year, and she persevered to complete her degree in four years.
Rochelle was a teacher for the New York City school district, beginning and then ending her education career in the Bronx. She had a significant second career in business eventually working for many years at Reader’s Digest in Chappaqua, NY. She was a big fan of Lila Wallace and her support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and very much appreciated the priceless artworks that graced the Reader’s Digest office buildings.
Rochelle will be most remembered for her kind and giving nature. She loved her children fiercely and created a warm and safe place for them. She was a listener without equal and possessed a truly compassionate spirit. Her kindness was inspirational and a source of comfort and restoration to family and friends. Her disposition was to always look to the positive and a bright future.
We would like to thank the caregivers who supported Rochelle over the last five years. Elizabeth, Fifi, Vicky, Nikki, Sara and Serk provided loving, compassionate care and genuine friendship. We would also like to thank Dr. Choudhury for her careful attention and compassionate care over many years of primary care.
Donations in Rochelle’s honor may be made to either GoProject (goprojectnyc.org) in support of closing the New York City schools achievement gap or to Hunter College (hunter.cuny.edu).
Private services are being held.
