Mike was born and lived his entire life in the Seattle area serving his community during his career at Seattle City Light while also serving his Nation and State serving in the United States Air Force and Washington National Guard.
After graduating Cleveland High School, Mike joined Seattle City Light July of 1967 at the age of 18 following in his father Eugene Whalen. Mike started working with a civil construction crew digging ditches. In less than 1 year Mike joined the US Air Force –McChord AFB in April of 1968. He served a yearlong tour of duty in Vietnam from 1970-1971. After completing his active duty he returned to Seattle City Light of May 1972. Mike also joined the Washington State Air National Guard to continue his military career.
Mike’s career with the Air Force and Air Guard encompassed 26 years of traveling the world and moving up the ranks to retire as an E-9 CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT in the Air National Guard. Earning metals, commendations, awards and the hearts and minds of many soldiers thru out his career.
Mike loved the simple life- nothing too extravagant but yet lived an extraordinary life that demanded perfection.
Mike’s career with SCL Mike moved up the ladder in his 43 years he was with the city. From digging ditches to the chair in the office. Earning the well-deserved nick name “Iron Mike”. Thru the years working many storms, keeping the power on for millions alongside his many lifelong friends/family ensuring each other’s safe return home every day. Safety was of utmost priority to Mike, he served as a SCL LU 77 Safety Officer for 15 years - he participated /trained in Safety Commissions and Pole Top Rescues.
Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing growing up with his dad and brother and friends. He then taught his son the same. Mike was also a huge sports fan he loved his Seattle teams; Mariners and Huskies most of all.
He played baseball playing many years on the SCL softball team with all of his buddies from work. He also enjoyed bowling, Mike bowled many years with his buddies from SCL in leagues and tournaments. (He really love them “Good Ole Boys”) Mike enjoyed being involved in all his children’s sports (Baseball, Soccer, Basketball, Volley Ball, Bowling and Football) from coaching to cheering on the sidelines or in the stands. He enjoyed it all and never missed a game.
Mike always enjoyed camping his whole life from being a child with his parents and siblings to all his buddies and kids up at the Skagit. Even this last summer with his family and many friends at his property in Lake Stevens. He had many great times standing around the fire or standing behind the grill whipping up some food.
He will be missed by all family and friends that he has met throughout his careers; friends from the restaurants and Bars -Campgrounds and Parks he touched our hearts.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Carmen; First wife Sandra Whalen and Second wife Rose Whalen.
Survived by his Brothers Patrick (his twin), Terry, Dave and sister Kim.
Mike’s Children: Traci, Troy and Tiffini and Grandchildren: Brianna, Tristan and Mason; Stepson, Dallas and Granddaughter Myanna.
A Celebration of Mike's Life will be held Wednesday, December 7, 11:00AM; Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home 11111 Aurora Ave N. Seattle.
