The family of C. Don Filer are sad to announce that he passed away on July 1, 2018 in Carefree, Arizona. He was born on November 1, 1924 in Marshalltown, Iowa, however he lived most of his life in the Seattle, Washington area.
In 1941 he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps at the age of 17. He was sent to the South Pacific to maintain naval aircraft on the Solomon Islands and in Fiji. Six weeks after the war's end in 1945, he was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Second Class and returned back home to Iowa.
In 1945, Don headed to Seattle where he could continue to enjoy the sea and the sky. By 1950 he had earned his commercial pilots' license. During his lifetime he owned float planes, single and multi-engine aircraft and numerous boats which he used to cruise to Canada every summer so he could enjoy fishing and time with his family.
In 1947, Don joined the Preferred Casualty Association as an insurance agent. Shortly thereafter he started his own insurance agency, The C. Don Filer Agency, Inc. which he would eventually grow to six offices. Don became one of the largest insurance agencies to represent Pemco Insurance Company. He also owned an insurance premium finance company, commercial property holding business and a leasing company.
Don was a founding director of the Museum of Flight and was a trustee and member of their executive committee. He served on the board of Evergreen Bank for 32 years. He was a past president of the Aircraft Owners Pilot Association (AOPA,). He was a Shriner and lifetime member of both the Seattle Yacht Club and Queen City Yacht club. Don was also one of the owners of Seattle's Elliott Bay Marina.
Don is survived by his wife, Sallie, of 52 years, his five children Doug (Candy) Filer, Paula (Kevin) Congleton, Denise (David) Baker, Elizabeth Volpe and Tod (Annette) Filer. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and loyal companion, his dog Ginger.
Memorial to be held at Seattle's Museum of Flight on July 14, 2018 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm.
