Anne Elene Franck was born to Christ and Signe Nes on March 17, 1924 in Baerum, Norway. Her family moved to the U.S. in 1928 and settled in Marinette, Wisconsin. Speaking only Norwegian in kindergarten, she graduated with honors from high school.
Anne and her father were recruited by the Boeing Company shortly after her graduation and moved to Seattle. After a year, the rest of the family joined them. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1950 with degrees in English and Education. Anne was a member of the first elementary education graduating class at the UW and taught in the Seattle Public Schools for many years. She especially enjoyed her years teaching kindergarten and music.
Anne married Ralph W. Franck on August 16, 1952, in Seattle. They were married for 62 years before Ralph’s death in 2014. She was a faithful member of UPC for almost 70 years, served as organist and piano accompanist for children’s choirs and fellowship groups, from Calvin Club to Keenagers. She attended a committed women’s Bible study group that met for decades, and with Ralph, was part of UPC’s World Deputation ministry, interviewing college students for placement in short term mission assignments.
Anne enjoyed being surrounded by classical music, attending UW drama productions and the Seattle Pops. Her beautiful singing voice was a joy to hear in choirs and congregational singing.
She planned many Elderhostel trips, as well as European and Scandinavian adventures. Anne and Ralph spent many happy Februarys in Hawaii. Anne was passionately devoted to her family near and far. Fifty years after leaving Norway, she returned with dozens of relatives welcoming her home. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and attended Scandinavian language and culture classes at the UW after retiring. Traveling to Oxford, England, at age 81, she commented, “I may be old, but I still like to learn !”
Anne died peacefully at home on the sunny spring morning of May 4. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Ralph, sisters Christine and Mary, brother Willy, infant son John, and granddaughter Jackie Elizabeth. She is survived by her daughter Kristie Franck, daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and John Sholar, brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Helen Franck, brother-in-law Gary Atwood and his wife, Susan, and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks and appreciation for the compassionate care of Dr. Seth A. Cohen, and Anne’s care team at Evergreen Hospice, Julie, Shealyn, Jean, Matt, and Mike.
