I got to know Andy as a roommate at Yale, when he joined in with two others from Gardena to share a suite at Pierson residential college. Always congenial, scholarly, reading advanced Japanese while the rest of us studied Beginning Japanese. Andy was able to simplify John Rawls 1000 page “A Theory of Justice” as an aside, when I asked what he was reading. 

As mentioned, Andy also had a dry wit, and enjoyed games. Always up for playing bridge or Risk until late at night, then sharing midnight snacks of pizza or Philly cheese steak grinders. 

For New Years 1988, he hosted us at his Akasaka apartment to watch the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game, when myself and my wife visited Japan.

We last saw him on a Zoom call in late 2021. Andy called in from Seattle, and said he got stranded there when COVID closed the borders, and was waiting for a visa back to Japan. How sad to hear he never got back to his family. A true gentleman and friend, sorely missed.

I am really sorry to hear this. My condolences to his wife and family. 

I knew Andy in Tokyo, where we worked together. He was an exceptional lawyer, not only because of his legal skills but because he was such an amazing person. I always enjoyed working on projects and problems with him. He started by wanting to understand what you needed and wanting to find a solution. He would always think before he spoke, he had endless patience and tolerance and he was always so on top of the subject that it came easy to him. 

Outside of the formal work environment Andy was a popular and highly respected member of our team. He had a dry and very sharp sense of humour and  his rich and varied life (starting in Hawaii) gave him depth and insight that made him very good company. He kept in touch too, and until he left Tokyo would regularly show up to reunion evenings. I am part of a group of people in Tokyo, and spread around the rest of the world, who will sorely miss Andy.

Andrew was a quiet but faithful member of our Grandview community and I was impressed by his attendance and personal attention to matters of importance to the wellbeing of our building and our Board of Directors.  He joined the Board as treasurer when we needed someone to give us dedicated attention to our finances and he helped us immensely. 
We will miss him and his quiet presence in our Grandview family.
I send condolences and prayers to his family and friends in this time of sorrow. 

I first met Andrew when I joined the Grandview Home Owners Board of Directors where he served as our Treasurer about 1 1/2 years ago—mostly via Zoom and emails because of COVID 19 restrictions.

I appreciated how he was able to distill 38 pages of management and budget information that clearly identified our financial conditions, both problems, and achievements into something we could understand and act upon and that owners could also understand at the monthly meetings

He provided us with well thought out documented trends and recommendations on how we should develop our upcoming budget to improve our HOA financial well being 

He did this all while working full-time.  As a licensed attorney for 35 years in California since1985 and New York since 1992, he specialized in International Law, Taxation, and Immigration.

He shared with me his sadness and frustrations that he could not travel to Japan to see his wife and kids because of the COVID 19 restrictions.

I will miss him and his subtle and patient way of getting us to understand how our HOA board could improve our financial situation.  

We commiserated on how long it took for us to get our units restored from water leak damage so it was apparent that board members receive no better treatment than other owners.  His took 7 months and mine just 3. We both hoped that our upcoming SageWater Renew system will significantly reduce our pinhole leak problem which has been draining our financial resources.

His life was too short, but he left me with a better understanding of how to live it to its fullest with calmness and sense of purpose and was a great role model for others to follow.

My condolences to his wife, Noako, and family.
