Hello family of Al Young,
I’m a former student of Mr. Young. He was and still is my favorite teacher (it’s been almost 20 years since I last saw him). I took all the classes he offered at Roosevelt. Except shop! All his classes were so memorable- I took his history, film studies, and government classes. He also offered an after school Honors Gov class (making this type of credit accessible to student who normally would not take an honors course) where we read “The Notebooks” (a book about the criminal Justice system). He showed us Barack Obama’s 2005 DNC speech. He was the only teacher to ask me one on one what my goals were. He is the reason I went on to work in journalism and have since become a teacher. What’s so incredible is that just those things alone would be commemorable but he went above and beyond by talking opening about ADHD in class.  By telling deeply enthralling stories of how he would stand on a chair and put his textbooks on the fridge so he could focus. How brilliant it is to see so much of yourself in your teacher. How brilliant it is that he had the courage to share and completely strip away any shame so many student were silently feeling. He is a gift. More

Dear Young Family,

I went to Presidio and Washington with Al and remember him as a real nice boy.  As an adult, he attended reunions and hosted one at his Sis’s place in S.F. He was always full of life and always proud of his family.

May his life be a blessing.

I just can't believe this has happened. I was looking forward to seeing and visiting with Al this coming season. Never met a more enthusiastic person. My prayer is for God to comfort Vicki and the family at this horrible time. The Northwest has lost a wonderful person.

I met Al at a drag race back in 1981 at then S.I.R. and we remained friends all those years. Not a race would go by where he didn't come up and say hello and ask me how I was doing. He was one of few racers who would smile and laugh if he got beat, he was just never in a bad mood. Always had a smile on his face! Al will truly be missed by thousands of racer friends and fans.

Al was a great co-worker of mine, first at Summit Alternative High School and later at Summit K-12.  He was a “can do” guy.  In his early career teaching alternative students at Summit , we referred to him as “The Arts Teacher: Martial Arts, Mechanical Arts, and Culinary Arts because he taught Kung Fu, Automobile Mechanics, and Chinese Cooking.  Later, of course, he also taught history and social science, again showing his ability to excel in many different areas that helped young people grow into their adult lives. And added to the subjects taught within the school environment, he also chaperoned trips abroad which again broadened the knowledge of those lucky students who came under his tutelage.
