Thelma Nelson Brannon, 94 yrs, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, in Gilbert, AZ, at Hospice of the Valley Lund Home. She was born in Pearson, AR, on Aug. 29, 1921, to Thomas Nelson Martin and Isa Emily Landrum Martin. She was the youngest of four children. She attended high school in Rose Bud, AR, and graduated in three years. On Sept. 7, 1939, she married George Edward Brannon. They had planned to arrive at the minister’s home before dark, but were late because of a flat tire on the car. When they did arrive, the minister had already gone to bed, so he pulled his trousers on over his pajamas and married them by the headlights of the car in front of his house. They moved to Phoenix, AZ, within days, where they lived, worked and raised their two children. In 1978 they moved to Mesa. Thelma worked for Chambers Belt Company for over 30 years, and retired as vice president. She was a faithful charter member of New Life Assembly of God in Mesa. Over the years she served on the Elder Board, and was active in many other areas of church ministry. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, her parents, her brother, Fred Jackson Martin, and sister Edna Martha Strain. She is survived by her sister, Wilma Ruth Herrington of Little Rock, AR; son Edward Brannon (Pamela) of Buckeye, AZ; daughter Linda Gaines (William) of Mesa, AZ; grandsons Wade Brannon (Jennifer), of Maricopa, AZ; Owen Brannon, of Chandler, AZ; Eugene Smith (Beth), of Maryville, TN; William Gaines, Jr, of San Tan, AZ; Michael Gaines (Nichole), of Mesa, AZ; Scott Gaines (Jamie), of Chandler, AZ; granddaughter Kirstena Crook (William), of Mesa, AZ; 18 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
