Not surprising to anyone who knew him well, he was making jokes, bantering with the nurses, and making very precise food requests right up until the day before he died.
John was a natural storyteller, and he loved nothing more than making people laugh.
He was born on September 17, 1944, in Rochester, New York, and he grew up in Pittsford, NY and Menlo Park, CA, along with his brother, Bob, sister, Margaret, and parents Robert and Margaret Matthews.
After graduating from Menlo-Atherton High School in 1962, John served in the U.S. Army, stationed in France. He later graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in journalism.
He began his professional career as a sportswriter, and then went on to work in newspaper syndication sales for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, John traveled all over the country and made many life-long friends with a variety of newspaper editors, cartoonists, and writers.
He had an extraordinarily funny mind, a unique ability to tell a story, and a quick wit about him that charmed all he met.
John moved to Seattle in 1992, along with his wife, Martha. He was a devoted father, and his two boys, Phillip and Andrew, were the shining stars in his life. Watching the boys play sports as they grew up was his very favorite pastime.
John is survived by his wife, Martha, sons Phillip and Andrew, sister Margaret (Ron) of Sunriver, OR, nephews Doug and Geoff Angell, and brother Bob (Marcia) of Mountain View, CA.
