Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Bessie was born on August 9, 1929, in Alliance, Nebraska to George and Faye (Beezley) Pomplun. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1947. She taught school in Custer County and later was employed by the Ma Bell Phone Company in Broken Bow Nebraska. She was united in marriage to the love of her life James L McMurtry January 1, 1950, in Kearney, Nebraska. They moved to Scottsbluff, and she continued to work for the phone Company for several years. In 1950 they adopted Bessie’s nephew, Howard Greene. In 1954 they had a son James “Monte” McMurtry and then in 1960 they had a daughter Peggy to finish their family.
She was a bookkeeper for the Pollard Ford company then later Cannon Brothers Ford, where she retired after 38 years.
Bessie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Scottsbluff, and the VFW Auxiliary Post #1681.
She enjoyed camping, fishing, and boating. Bessie loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Bessie is survived by her son James “Monte” (Melody) McMurtry; daughter Peggy (Rocky) Robinson; seven grandchildren: Melinda Macias, Elisa (Todd) Roseborough, Dustin McMurtry, Kelli French, Tobin (Alicia) McMurtry, Clinton McMurtry, and Hallie (Travis) Vodehnal; twelve great grandchildren: McKenzi Monson, Rylee Roseborough, Caden Garton, Payton Roseborough, Caleb Garton, Reegan French, Bailee French, Carter Garton, Addyson Roseborough, Caleb Hamilton, Noah McMurtry and Lenny McMurtry; 2 great great grandchildren: Cassie and Kaitlyn Monson; Sister-in-law Judy McMurtry, the fathers of her great grandchildren; Cody Garton and Robert French. She was very proud of the fact that she had, at last count, over 190 nieces and nephews,
She was preceded in death by her husband James “Jim” McMurtry (Oct 2012), both parents, and in-laws, son; Howard Greene and his wife Carol, brother and sister-in-law; Wayne “Pete” and Barbara Pomplun, sisters; Alice (Jim) Fair and Florence Greene Ash, brother-in-law; Gary McMurtry, sister- in-laws; Ruth (Apsie) Hauschild, Mellie (Hal) McKinney, and several nieces and nephews.
