Maureen (Reenie) Murphy, 82 of Norwell passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023, at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham. Maureen was born in Winchester Hospital, Winchester, MA on March 10, 1940, to Leo Peter and Ethyl Agnes (Tierney) Murphy.
She was a devoted sister to Neil Murphy of Scituate, Massachusetts, and his partner Lynn Palmiter; Thomas Murphy and his wife, Susan (Farrell) Murphy of Scituate; Karen Laugelle of Cohasset; the late Helen Ann (Murphy) Wuerth and her late husband John E. Wuerth, of Eastpointe, Michigan; and the late John Leo “JL” Murphy and his wife Linda of Scituate.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law Paul Laugelle of Cohasset, her closet niece, Diane Kliebert of Mount Clemens, Michigan and many nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Maureen graduated from Scituate High School, Scituate, Mass in 1957.
Maureen worked at the New England Telephone Company before it became dial.
Maureen waitressed and tended bar at the Minot Light Inn, the Bell Bouy, The Yard Arm, and Cocke Kettle.
She enjoyed traveling in her younger years, to San Francisco, England, and Ireland.
Maureen was an Insurance Underwriter for Hartford Insurance, first in Boston then in Cambridge and then in Burlington, Massachusetts. She retired in 1999, then continued to work for the Hartford part time, 40 plus hours a week for many years.
Maureen was one of the most kind, giving and loving people you will ever meet.
She was loved by her many family members, friends and everyone who took the time to get to know her.
She also worked for OLLI or Osher Lifelong Learning Institute [previously LETS (Life Enrichment Through Studies)] program at the University of Massachusetts where she maintains the membership list.
She retired from this one day a week job at OLLI in July of 2010.
Maureen was a longtime member of SSGS, joining in the late 1990's. During her time with SSGS, Maureen worked for the betterment of the society in a number of different capacities.
She served as Vice-President in the late/early 1990's/2000's. She was an active board member until her passing, continuing to share her thoughts and ideas.
From the earliest days of the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium, Maureen represented SSGS as their delegate or alternate delegate.
She volunteered for the Council on Aging, driving people to Dr's appointments, visiting shut ins, and where she taught Mahjongg. She loved to play Mahjongg with friends and family.
She was the representative for Norwell Council of Aging on the Board for South Shore Elder Services.
Her true passion was Genealogy. Maureen belonged to many Genealogical Societies and was involved in the planning of many genealogical events and conferences. She spent many afternoons visiting cemeteries and combing through libraries with her niece Diane.
She became a member of the DAR April 2016.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 2-4 pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, with a funeral home service starting at 3:30 pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
The family would like to thank the NVNA nurses, especially Jo Calaboro, also the nurses and staff at Pat Roche Hospice House for their exceptional and compassionate care during Maureen’s stay.
