Francis A. O'Meara

Born in Cambridge, MA., he was the son of the late Francis A. and Anne R. (O’Toole) O’Meara. Franny graduated from Boston Latin School, the University of Massachusetts and Suffolk University Law School. He spent 18 years as an Assistant District Attorney with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office where he fulfilled his lifelong dream to prosecute murderers and eventually became Chief of Homicide. He wanted to “hurt people who hurt people”. He was well known for his fierce cross examinations and animated closing arguments with a booming voice that could be heard throughout the courthouse where he was known as just “Franny”. During his time as Chief of Homicide, he worked with defense attorney Christopher Muse who represented Bobby Joe Leaster, a man who had been wrongly convicted of murder. Franny aggressively pursued the truth and determined Bobby Joe was not guilty as he had found the murder weapon in the case and that weapon belonged to another man who was not Leaster. One of his more challenging cases was outlined in a Boston Globe Magazine article titled “Prince of Darkness”. Prior to law school Franny worked as a private investigator. He was hired by Hugh Hefner to secretly guard his daughter Christie Hefner shortly after Patty Hearst was kidnapped. Once she was told of this she turned to Franny and asked if this was true. He responded, “I think you should have bought that blue dress in Bloomingdales.” He later left the DA’s office and established a private law practice as a criminal defense attorney. He was at his best in front of a jury.

In addition to his law practice he designed and built beautiful homes around the South Shore. One of those homes is his family home where he and Mary raised their three children.

Franny loved riding Harleys, the ocean, rock and roll and his 1950’s model trains but mostly he loved his family.

He was the devoted father of Eamon O’Meara and his wife, Megan of Weymouth; Alicia O’Meara and fiancé Joseph Candler of Quincy; and Evan O’Meara and his partner, Kali Farwell of Hull.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews and his beloved friends, Herbert and Deborah Stelzer, Ann and Steven Carroll and Kathi and Robert Botto.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 from 4-8 pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 10 am at Resurrection of Lord Church, 1057 Main Street Hingham. Interment immediately following at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Scituate.
