Douglas Wilcox, 63 of North Chesterfield, VA passed away peacefully on May 1, 2023, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, MA after a long battle with kidney cancer. Doug was born in Adams, MA on June 15, 1959, to William Joseph Wilcox Jr and Pauline Rachel (Belanger) Wilcox.
Doug is predeceased by his wife Darla Jean (DJ) and his father William. He is survived by his stepson Joseph Tackett and his wife Michelle and grandson Dylan Tackett of Gray Court, SC, daughters Kellie Wilcox & Kyra Wilcox of Horn Lake, MS, as well as his mother Pauline Wilcox of Norwell, MA, brother Bill Wilcox and his wife Sharon of Whitinsville, MA, sister Jane Drew and her husband Kevin of New London, NH and brother Tom Wilcox and his wife JoAnn of Scituate, MA.
He was a loving and fun uncle to Jared and his wife Sarah, Sam and his wife Annie, Katie, Patrick and his wife Lina, Thomas and his wife Jenn, Tammy and her husband Jay, Jack and Abbey. Great-uncle to Kayla, Emma, Quinn, Levi, Bella, Gavin and Cam.
Doug’s most fond memories included coaching Kellie and Kyra’s sports teams and going on annual family vacations to Orlando, Myrtle Beach and the mountains of Virginia.
Doug graduated from Duxbury High School in 1977 and went on to attend Providence College where he graduated in 1981. He was a huge sports fan and even though he moved from Massachusetts in the 1990s he still remained a big fan of the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox. That said, golf was his number one sport to play and watch. Those who knew him well will recall what a fun competitor, partner and all-around great golfer he was throughout his entire life from high school, college and beyond. He always took such pride in his ability to compete at a high level. In fact, he had his last round of even par golf this past summer when playing with his lifelong and dear friend, Peter Ayers. He made so many great friends through a lifetime of golf and always enjoyed his friendships with Alan Posner, Patrick McGrath, Bill Burke, Greg Washburn, Tom Herrick, the Gunnarson family, the Garrity family, the crew at North Hill and countless others.
Doug spent over 25 years as Plant Manager in the mattress manufacturing business most of which was at Symbol Mattress where he worked until October of 2021. He forged lifelong friendships with so many people while in the industry that it was truly a second family for him. Some of his great friends include Terry Byrd, Kenny Byrd, Vernon Byrd, Jake Graves, Larry Fox, AJ Williamson and Dick Lloyd. His staff always respected him because he was one of those managers who led by example with an awesome work ethic and team approach to each day. It was not unusual for Doug to step into any position in the plant and pitch in to help the team complete the challenge of the day.
What makes us most happy in remembering Doug is his great belief and relationship with God. He was an active member at church within each community that he lived. He was always upbeat, never judgmental and loved making new friends - a truly awesome person.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm followed by a celebration of life service starting at 12:00 pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA 02066.
