Shannon, Arthur M. - of Marshfield, formerly of Scituate, passed away peacefully at home with his family on the morning of February 28, 2015. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. (Carty) Forrest. Formerly married to Shirley Ann Shannon.
He was the devoted father of Steve and Renee of Chaska, MN; Arthur and Carol of Scituate, MA; Donald of Raleigh, NC; Robert and Cheryl of Moscow, PA; Michael and Barbara of Scottsdale, AZ; Patrick and Stacie of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Scott and Elizabeth of Dover, MA and many beloved grandchildren.
Dear stepfather of Kathleen Regan, Matthew Forrest and Lauren Forrest.
Loving brother of Catherine (Robert) Kinchla of Falmouth, MA; William Shannon Sr. of Dracut, MA; Francis (Faith) of Onset, MA, and Mary Ellen McCarthy of Marshfield, MA.
Raised in Waltham, MA, he was the son of the late Francis and Mary Shannon. Graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School in Waltham, MA. Arthur went on to graduate from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He was a Korean War era veteran serving with the United States Army from 1953-1956. Upon his honorable discharge from the US Army, Arthur went on to start several businesses, Shannon/Thompson Corp, A. M. Shannon Corp, and finishing his career as EB Systems Engineering. A highly talented designer and fabricator of automated resistance welding and brazing machines, as well as Electron Beam technology. He designed and developed systems for GE, Pratt and Whitney, Honeywell, and Raytheon.
Arthur loved spending time on his boat with family and friends cruising Massachusetts Bay and setting his anchor at The Spit. He was adored by his sons and their families who have continued to carry on his wonderful sense of humor and love of life. He was an avid reader, traveler, enjoyed playing the piano and listening to classical music. He also loved his “executive luncheons” on Friday’s spent at the Mill Wharf and PJ’s. Arthur adored his home on 3rd cliff and Rivermore Beach where he raised his children and always had an open door for friends, family, or a person in need. To this day, his sons and their families always enjoy coming back to Scituate to reminisce and relive the memories that Arthur had created for his family.
Visiting hours at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate on Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 4:00-8:00pm. Funeral Mass at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 12:00 Noon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Shannon’s memory may be made to the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) at 120 Longwater Dr, Norwell, MA 02061.
