Evan Freeman Grugett of Eastchester, NY, died peacefully Thursday, September 28, at White Plains Hospital. He was 77 years old. Evan battled pancreatic cancer for over a year and a half with strength and perseverance. He never complained about his symptoms and put others' feelings about his illness before his own.
A true baby boomer, Evan was born in New Orleans on December 30, 1945. He and his parents moved to New York City in 1949. Evan grew up in the Bronx, White Plains, and Manhattan, memorizing the New York urban landscape at a young age.
When other men his age dodged the Vietnam draft, Evan enlisted himself in the army in 1966 and served until 1968. He specialized in Field Artillery, trained at Fort Sill, and was an incredibly proud Veteran.
Evan was a licensed Home Inspector in Westchester Country and beyond for over 40 years. The New York Times wrote a piece on his career for the cover of the Real Estate section in 2005. Well respected in the home inspection community, Evan taught at Southern Westchester BOCES and was an active member of ASHI, The American Society of Home Inspectors.
A loyal Jets fan, Evan lived for his tailgating experiences with his friends and family. He dressed head to toe in Jets gear on game days and attended every home game for over two decades.
Evan celebrated 50 years of marriage with his wife, Carol (nee: D'Alessandro), on October 29, 2022.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his three daughters, Eva Ferrara (Greg Ferrara), Jaclyn LaRosa (Greg LaRosa), and Stephanie Grugett; his sister Lucy Grugett (Sally Owens); his 5 grandchildren, Alessandra, Gregory, Christian, Julian, and Micaela; his brother-in-law John D'Alessandro; and his niece and nephew Petrina Vaidie (Florant Vaidie) and Douglas D'Alessandro. He is preceded by his parents, Sylvia Grugett (nee: Freeman), Alvin Eldridge Grugett, and sister-in-law Dorace D'Alessandro.
In lieu of gifts, please donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Society.
