Scarsdale—Donald J. Sullivan, beloved husband of the late Theresa M. Sullivan passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2021 with his family by his side. Donald was born in the Bronx, New York on July 18, 1929 to the late Johanna and Joseph Sullivan. On January 28, 1956 Donald married Theresa and they spent the next 63-plus years by each other’s side. Donald is survived by his daughter Theresa (Casimir) and his sons Daniel and Douglas. Donald was loving grandfather to Grace, Danielle, Matthew, Brittany and John. Also surviving is his brother Dennis. Donald was predeceased by his brother Joseph.
Judge Sullivan was a former New York State Supreme Court Justice. In 1984 Judge Sullivan retired from the Supreme Court and became a partner at Bleakley Platt & Schmidt LLP till he retired in 2014. During his career as an attorney, Judge Sullivan held numerous positions in government, including Attorney, New York State Rent Commission; Secretary, Department of Buildings, New York City; Assemblyman, New York State Legislature; Judge, New York City Civil Court; Justice, New York State Supreme Court; and Associate Justice, Appellate Term, First Department, New York State Supreme Court. He also was an adjunct Professor of Criminal Law at Westchester Community College, and Faculty Advisor, University of Nevada, National Judicial College.
Judge Sullivan was a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the Bronx County Bar Association. He was the president of the Guild of Catholic Lawyers, New York, New York from 1989 to 1994. Judge Sullivan was past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Local Division 29.
Judge Donald J. Sullivan was a knight of Malta. Judge Donald J. Sullivan will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and will greatly be missed.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 22-2021 at 10AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale, NY. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, New York.
