Matthew "Matt" P. Greenwald

Matt was born on December 14, 1929 near Reward, Saskatchewan. He was the oldest son of Sebastian and Josephine Greenwald. His childhood years were spent on a farm West of Scott, Saskatchewan. Matt walked to Scott school, a 2 and ¾ mile path that took him through Scott Experimental farm. After completing Grade 8, Dad stayed home and farmed full time with his father. In the winter 17 year old Matt worked at Smith Brothers, being involved in the construction of the Wilkie Autobody shop. He then worked in the autobody shop until Spring 1947 to help with farming. Successive winters were then spent building power lines throughout many locations in Saskatchewan. At one point, he became foreman of his own crew. He also continued to farm with his Dad during these years, and in 1951 he rented his own parcel of land.

As a young man, Matt enjoyed curling, playing softball and attending dances in the area. In 1949, Matt and Mary met at a dance. They began dating in spring of 1952. On June 9, 1953 Matt married Mary Theresia Nestmann in Wilkie. Their first home together was on the Senger Farm south of Scott which they were renting, and from there they worked to acquire more farm land, eventually purchasing the Senger farm and moving a different house onto it. Here they spent the next 39 years farming and raising their 6 children.

In the 1960’s dad started purchasing snowmobiles to use to get to his feedlot in the coulee as well as recreationally by the whole family. In the late 1970’s Matt and Mary began to travel on winter holidays. In 1992, deciding to step back from farming, Matt and Mary established a residence on the beach at Metinota. Mom and dad loved to have the whole family spend many weekends at the lake over the years. An avid golfer, Dad helped build and thoroughly enjoyed the golf course at Meota, as well as many sunny days spent fishing on the lake in his pontoon boat. These days were special to him and everyone else in the family that he took along.

Not ready to retire, Matt traveled back and forth from the lake to Scott where he continued to work in the gravel business that he had developed. Enjoying everything to do with payloader work and driving semi, Matt didn’t abandon the driver seat until he turned 80. Now completely retired, the next few years were spent in a lovely condo in North Battleford. As needs changed, Matt and Mary decided to make the move to Saskatoon. Trinity Manor, and later Samaritan Place became Dad’s final residences.

Matt was predeceased by his parents Sebastian and Josephine, parents-in-law Henry and Mary Nestmann, his brother Peter and sister-in-law Anne Greenwald, sister Johanna Gruber (Frank) and Son-In-Law Richard Bloski, sister-in-law Helen Cey and her husband, John, Sister-in-law, Agnes Frey, brother-in-law Henry Nestmann, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife of 71 years Mary, and children - Glen (Sherry), Trudi Bloski, Randy (Celeste), Barry (Kimberley), Emeric (Caroline), Jason (Lori), 14 Grandchildren, 24 Great grandchildren, several step grandchildren and great step grandchildren.
