Joyce was born in Humboldt, the youngest of six children. She spent her childhood years on a family farm at Middle Lake. He siblings were: Bromley, Keith, Phyllis, Robert and Edward Baker. She attended Merrywood, a one-room school until Grade 10. In 1957 she went to Regina to complete high school at Qu’appelle Diocesan. After one year at college, she became a teacher and taught in Qu’appelle which was the same school her mother went to when she first came to Canada in 1913. Joyce also spent time teaching at Trossachs Inglewood School.
In 1961, she met her future husband Wayne, they married in 1963. Sister Phyllis married Wayne’s older brother Vern, in 1964 and the two couples often vacationed together, camping at various western and provincial parks, where there was a golf course.
In 1966, Wayne and Joyce moved to Prince Albert where they adopted two children, Derek and Jodie. In 1972, they moved to Saskatoon where Wayne worked at the courthouse and Joyce ran a daycare at home for 10 years and later worked part time at Sears mail order store.
As Wayne’s health declined, they moved to an assisted living home on Edmonton Avenue where he passed away in 2002. Joyce took part in most activities in the home such as cards, bingo, scrabble etc. She was diagnosed with MS, when her health declined, she moved to a full care home and later to Stensrud Lodge where she was well liked by everyone. She passed away peacefully on Saturday December 30, 2023.
A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor Street, Saskatoon).
